CHINACOAT[R] 2008: from Nov. 26-28 Guangzhou will host this annual exhibition, which has become the main attraction for companies looking to capitalize on China's growing market for coatings.

Since its inception in 1996, CHINACOAT has become the key event for coatings, printing inks and adhesives suppliers who wish to enter, expand and consolidate their positions in the Chinese market. In terms of exhibit size, number of exhibitors and visitors, CHINACOAT is now one of the largest coatings shows held in the world today and is organized by Sinostar International.

An annual event, alternating between the cities of Guangzhou and Shanghai every November, CHINACOAT 2008 will return to Guangzhou from Nov. 2628 at the Guangzhou International Convention and Exhibition Center (Pazhou Complex). More than 500 exhibitors met some 21,000 visitors when the show was last held there in 2006 and this year's numbers are expected to exceed those.

CHINACOAT CONFERENCE

The 6th CHINACOAT Conference will be held at the Ramada Plaza Guangzhou from Nov. 24-25, two days prior to the opening of the exhibition. The theme of the conference is "Wood Coatings: Formulating a Sustainable Future."

The intrinsically variable nature of wood makes it a challenging material to protect and decorate. Coatings for wood span a very wide range from opaque to transparent and low to high solids. However, wood requires careful selection of the appropriate coating sys tems to deliver long term performance, in both interior and exterior situations. This has led to a renewed urgency to understand the role of physical, chemical and biological properties in relation to durability and service life.

The keynote paper from the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, one of the most prestigious centers on wood research, will highlight the current trends and future needs in R&D. Topics covered at this bilingual event will include novel driers, additives and biocides, in-situ application of hybrid thin films, problems and their elimination in waterborne systems, the concept of microcapsules, the role of pigments to prolong durability and new generation formulations.

The conference will be of value to suppliers of raw materials and coatings manufacturers, as well as specifiers and users of wood coatings.

TECHNICAL WORKSHOPS

Two technical workshops, "Formulation of High Value-added Speciality Coatings & Inks" and "Nano-technology for Coatings & Inks" will be held on Nov. 2627 in the meeting room of the exhibition venue.

Topics to be discussed in the first workshop include: why high value-added speciality coatings and inks?; types of high value-added speciality coatings and inks; formulation of high value-added speciality coatings and inks; application of high value-added speciality coatings and inks; key issues with high value-added speciality coatings and inks; and the future market for high value-added speciality coatings and inks.

Topics to be discussed in the second workshop include: fundamentals of nano-technology; advantages of nanotechnology to coatings and inks; types of nano-materials relevant to coatings and inks; types of nano-technology for creation of new coatings and inks materials; future trends of nanotechnology relevant to coatings and inks; and the future market for nanocoatings and nano-inks.

NATIONAL PRESENTATIONS

Following the success of last year's presentations from Russia and Indonesia, Sinostar has invited specialists from Australia and Japan to make presentations on the coating developments of their countries, and to give insights on the latest market trends, challenge and opportunities facing these two countries.

Michael Hambrook, executive director of the Australian Paint Manufacturers' Federation, will present, "The Australian Paint Industry: A Market Overview." He will provide an overview of the Australian market for architectural and decorative paints and industrial coatings. He will look at market growth over the past ten years by product category, geographic area and by sales channels. Hambrook will also look at the growth in imports and exports particularly in regard to China/Australian trade.

Finally, Hambrook will comment on the latest regulatory initiatives such as the Commonwealth Government's restrictions on TBT-based anti-fouling paints, the impending control of VOC thresholds and the handling of post consumer paint.

Next, Shigeru Komazaki, general manager of Resin Technical Department 1, DIC Corporation, will present, "Latest Development of Waterborne Coating Resins in Japan."

The presentation will focus on market trends for environmental protection and the role of waterborne coating resins. Komazaki will discuss waterborne coating resins from polymer design technology, then will introduce 1K, 2K, modified and UV coatings with suitable coating systems on plastic or metal substrates for several applications, which exhibit characteristics such as adhesion on the plastic substrates, chemical resistance, hardness, weathering resistance and corrosion resistance.
