CHILL COMES OFF T.O. ICE RINK; FUND-RAISING EVENT FOR CIVIC ARTS PLAZA HAILED AS SUCCESS.

Byline: Annette Burget Bailey Daily News Staff Writer

It took 10 days to set up the temporary ice rink at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is a performing arts and administrative center located in Thousand Oaks, California. It was built in 1994 on the former site of "Jungleland" at a cost of $63.8 million.  - layering ice into several sheets until it was ready for skaters.

Removing it Monday was much less time-consuming. It took Brian Klavano and his staff of 20 workers about eight hours to shovel out the blocks of ice, transport them to a nearby ravine and, finally, tear down the railing.

It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  residents flocked to the temporary ice-skating rink at the Civic Arts Plaza from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day New Year's Day, among ancient peoples the first day of the year frequently corresponded to the vernal or autumnal equinox, or to the summer or winter solstice. In the Middle Ages it was celebrated among Christians usually on Mar. 25. .

Approximately 10,000 people used the rink during the holiday season, officials said.

``For the size of the ice, we did the largest volume here in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  - the community very much embraced it,'' Klavano said.

He said that it was better attended than initially anticipated, running at almost full capacity through its five-week stint, ranging from 500 to 800 skaters a day.

Patricia Moore, who serves as executive director for a nonprofit fund-raising group for the Civic Arts Plaza, said the outdoor ice rink was one of two annual fund-raisers scheduled throughout the year.

During the spring, the Alliance of the Arts arranges a golf tournament, consisting of mostly corporate sponsors and participants. The winter skating rink was planned with area families in mind, and also sought to provide the community a greater awareness of the Civic Arts Plaza.

``We figured if we had it here in the park - it would generate more interest, and bring in a lot of people,'' Moore said.

Moore laced on a pair of skates and even took a few whirls around the rink herself.

``I got out there three times, and by the third time I was really feeling confident. It was a lot of fun - I wish I could have gotten out there more,'' said Moore.

A first-time fund-raiser for the Alliance of the Arts, Moore anticipates bringing back the ice rink during next winter because of it's popularity.

He toured with Holiday on Ice for 10 years, and eventually went on to direct theatrical ice productions for Robin Cousins, the British Olympic skater, throughout the 1980s.
