CHILI PEPPER BEGINS SHIPPING INFINITE DISK; HIERARCHICAL STORAGE MANAGEMENT PROVIDES VIRTUALLY ENDLESS PC DISK SPACE

ATLANTA, Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Chili Pepper Software(TM), an innovator in disk management technology, began shipping Infinite Disk(TM) for DOS, a powerful software utility that automates disk management chores and maximizes available disk space.
Using Infinite Disk technology, PC users can increase hard disk capacity virtually five times and possibly much more.
Infinite Disk is the first PC~DOS-based software to employ the Hierarchical Storage Management methodology used so successfully in mainframe environments. With Infinite Disk, files are automatically compressed and~or relocated based on how long the file has gone unused. Files which have not been used for a specified number of days are compressed in place (Level 1 migration). When a file is not used for a specified number of additional days, the file is moved completely off-line to another DOS device such as floppy diskette, removable hard drive, floptical, or some other cost effective media (Level 2 migration).
While automatic file compression and archiving are extremely useful, Infinite Disk goes much further. Every file migrated by Infinite Disk still appears to be on the local disk drive and the PC operates as usual. When a migrated file is opened it will be automatically de-compressed or recalled from off-line media without disturbing the application in use. Simply put, Infinite Disk reduces or removes files that are never used, and brings them back automatically the moment they are needed.
"Infinite Disk is a data management architecture that will change the way people use computers," said Richard Onyon, president, Chili Pepper Software. "With the industry advances in operating systems and storage devices, there is no reason why PC users should be burdened with file and disk management. Our research shows that 70 percent or more of the data on a PC hard drive is never used at all, yet there's never enough disk space and no way to identify needless data. Infinite Disk solves this dilemma and finally lets the user get on with being productive."
Infinite Disk supports DOS versions 4.0 and higher and is available for $189 direct from Chili Pepper Software. An introductory price of $89 is available through Jan. 31, 1993. Infinite Disk is 100 percent Windows(TM) 3.x compatible, however, a Windows-based version is under development and scheduled for release in the first quarter of 1993. Additional versions in development for the OS2(R) and NetWare(R) operating systems are scheduled for release by the second quarter 1993.
Infinite Disk is the first in a series of DiskWare(TM) products from Chili Pepper Software which focus on automated storage management. Future product plans include intelligent file backup, physical drive monitoring, and disk optimization.
