``We want to say thank you for his dedication,'' said Ingrid Chapman, the center's director of resource development.

The Ron Emard ``Cherish The Child'' scholarship will be formally announced tonight at a special reception honoring Emard at the home of Gary and Jenny Garibay.

The scholarship will provide $500 to $1,000 in scholarship funds for the academic year 2001-02 for students pursuing a degree in child psychology, child development or social work.

Center officials hope the scholarship will encourage valley students to pursue therapy and social work careers, creating a source of workers to help local youngsters.

The fund was suggested after center officials noted the interest teen-agers showed in the center's booth at Air Force Plant 42's annual Salute to Youth career fair, Chapman said.

``This a way where the Children's Center can give back to the community,'' Chapman added.

Scholarships will be given to a beginning college student, to a student who's finishing two years at a community college and to a student going into a four-year college or university.
