CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS THEY MET IN PRESCHOOL, NOW THEY'LL WED 2 DECADES LATER.

Odds and ends from around the Valley:

Unless there's a married couple out there who met as babies in a hospital maternity ward maternity ward

somewhere, I figure Kristi Pinsker and Brian Kaplon's wedding this Sunday is one for the ``Guinness Book of Records.''

The Chatsworth couple met in preschool.

``They've gone from playhouse to setting up their own house,'' says Betty Gorelick, who was their teacher at Temple Ramat Zion Preschool in Northridge more than 20 years ago. Today, she's the school's director.

``How many couples can say they met the love of their life in preschool?''

None that Guinness seems to be aware of. The record book has the youngest marriage - an 11-month-old boy and 3-month-old girl married in Bangladesh to end a 20-year feud between two families over a disputed farm.

You've got to believe that one's going to be hard to beat.

And Guinness has the longest engagement on record - a couple in Mexico City Mexico City

City (pop., 2000: city, 8,605,239; 2003 metro. area est., 18,660,000), capital of Mexico. Located at an elevation of 7,350 ft (2,240 m), it is officially coterminous with the Federal District, which occupies 571 sq mi
who finally tied the knot at 82 after being engaged 67 years.

But there's no record for the married couple who met the earliest in life, so I'm nominating Kristi and Brian.

``People can't believe it when we tell them, but I guess it was just meant to be,'' says Kristi, 24, who's studying to become a teacher.

Brian, a CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000. , agrees. ``It is kind of strange that after all these years we'd end up back in the same place - playing house together again,'' the 24-year-old groom said.

The couple went to different schools after leaving preschool, but remained friends over the years before starting to date in college.

As far as Gorelick is concerned, they've become her preschool's poster children.

``I tell all the parents now that this is where their children may meet their future spouse, so keep an eye out.''

One of my favorite seniors in the Valley, Nora Hecker, was honored recently with the ``LA Pearl'' award as one of the city's outstanding senior citizens for all her volunteer work.

But, to me, she'll always be the recruit the Army let get away.

It was 1984, and the then 75-year-old Nora was sitting home one day when a package arrived from the Army. Inside was a promotional watch and recruitment material about how happy she'd be in today's coed Army.

``Thank you for the offer,'' Nora wrote back. ``But at 75, I think maybe I should pass on this career opportunity.''

The Army responded by sending her another watch and more recruitment material. Again, Nora declined the invitation.

Too bad. The Army could have used her. She's 95 now and still going strong - winning awards from the city for being outstanding.

You get the feeling that even at 75 Nora could have taught those young Army recruits a thing or two about life. Like how you never, ever give up.
