A 34-YEAR-OLD man who downloaded thousands of child porn pictures and movies has been jailed for nine months.

Trevor Emmett was found to have hundreds of the most sickening images of child abuse on his computer after police arrested him from his flat in Ashgrove House, Elland, last June.

Prosecutor Dave Mackay told Bradford Crown Court yesterday that around that time Emmett was understood to have tried to register as a childminder and had also tried to get work as a school caretaker.

"Neither of these succeeded", said Mr Mackay.

Investigators found more than 12,000 indecent images of youngsters on Emmett's computer together with over 1,000 child porn movies.

In police interviews Emmett said he had been searching the internet for adult pornography and denied getting sexual gratification from children.

Emmett, who has a social services support worker and was described by his barrister as naive and extremely vulnerable, pleaded guilty to 21 offences of possessing indecent images of children.

As well as serving his prison sen-tencEmmett has also been banned from having access to a personal computer or lap-top under an indefinite sexual offences prevention order.

He will also have to register as a sex offender with the police for the next 10 years.

The court heard that Emmett had no previous convictions and his barrister Sophie Drake submitted that a suspended prison term would help her client to get the support he needed.

"Despite the offences he's committed he doesn't seem to appreciate quite how serious they are," conceded Miss Drake.

"Ultimately it would be of greater benefit to Mr Emmett and the community if he were made the subject of a community order that would deal with his perception that they are not particularly serious offences".

But Judge Gullick told Emmett that the victims of his offending were the children being abused in the images he obtained.

"There were a large number of images and movies of level 4 and 5 which are the most serious levels," said the judge.

"The amount of material you had in my judgement, particularly level 4 and 5, make a prison sentence inevitable.

"You must understand that those who download and view this type of material at the level and scale that you did can only expect to serve a term of imprisonment".
