The boy, who deputies said was upset about being disciplined for a theft at a store the night before, came out after a firefighter crawled into the drain to talk to him and a utility crew opened a nearby manhole cover.

Firefighters were most alarmed about the boy's story that a friend was in another nearby section of the storm drain, Greene said.

A deputy thought he heard a sound in the drain, but officials could neither see a second boy nor get a response. Officials also checked at the friend's school and learned that he was absent.

A fire department urban search-and-rescue team was called out to search the drain but found it empty: The friend was eventually located at home.
