CHILD EVADES DEATH; GIRL EJECTED IN CAR CRASH.

Byline: Ivan Sciupac Daily News Staff Writer

A 3-year-old Panorama City girl survived what could have been a fatal crash Sunday when the toddler was thrown from a van that had been sideswiped at an intersection, police said.

The child, Yvonne Gonzalez, was ejected face first through a glass window and landed 30 feet from the vehicle in the 9:56 a.m. crash, said LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.

 Officer Jay Ealy.

The girl was taken to a nearby elementary school elementary school: see school.  where she was airlifted to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . She was listed in fair condition after undergoing treatment for cuts to her elbows and scrapes to her chest, hospital officials said.

``I actually thought this was going to be a fatal injury,'' Ealy said.

Ron Yukelson, a hospital spokesman, said the girl had to have some stitches and would be kept overnight for observation.

The girl's aunt, Enrequeta Rodriguez, was driving her Ford Aerostar The Ford Aerostar was Ford's first minivan, and was introduced as a 1986 model in summer 1985. After her vehicle stopped skidding, Rodriguez got out of the van to find a witness yelling at her, pointing at the little girl on the ground.

``She didn't realize right away that the baby was ejected,'' Ealy said.

Takimoto was not injured and was released at the scene.

The initial investigation did not reveal which driver was at fault, Ealy said. Both drivers claimed to have had a green light at the time of the collision.

Ealy said a child's car seat was properly secured in the van but its strap was found unbuckled. Investigators will try to determine if the latch was faulty or if the belt was not properly fastened.

He recalled a case in which a 2-year-old girl unfastened herself from a car seat moments before a collision.

``It actually has happened,'' Ealy said. ``It's not uncommon and it is very possible.''

The girl's family was unavailable for comment.
