CHILD CENTER CELEBRATES ONE YEAR.

The birthday song was sung, the candles were blown out and, just like that, the Civic Child Development Center in Van Nuys celebrated turning one year old Jan. 31.

Ed Hill, chairman of the board of CCRC, recalled when he first saw the building, which was wrapping up construction. "It was a shell a year ago -- a beautiful shell, but a shell," he said.

It now has various areas where children of all preschool ages play and learn. There's also a playground.

In addition to child care and a preschool program, the center offers educational opportunities for parents.

At the birthday bash, several children joined Yaroslavsky in blowing out candles placed in the top layer of a stack of cupcakes.

All 12 of the infant slots at the Civic Child Development Center are full. However, there are still openings for older preschool children.
