CHILD CARE PROVIDER IS HONORED BY CITY.Byline: DIANA PEYTON Community Columnist Child care provider Socorro Marquez of Van Nuys has been honored for her service to children. The owner of Marquez Day Care Center received a certificate of appreciation from the city of Los Angeles
Marquez believes in teaching children good habits early on. ``I work individually with each child. I want to take all of the potential they have and use it,'' she said. For nine years, Marquez has taught preschool-age children how to tell time, add, subtract and read. Kathleen Harden, whose daughters, Gabriella, 9, and Veronica, 5, attended the day care center, initiated the award and contacted Miscikowski's office. ``There are not really words to describe her, but if you have children you're not without a clue,'' she said. ``Her main goal is to bring out the best in each child no matter what their level or abilities.'' Marquez also paints, writes poetry and penned the lyrics and music for a CD titled ``Nayarit Cuna de la Mexicanidad,'' which she had produced in her home state of Nayarit, Mexico. The disc includes copies of her paintings. She shares her artistic abilities with the children in her program. ``Most of the children are excellent students,'' said Marquez. ``My life is art, but the children also enjoy art, so I teach them.'' The Fernando Award Foundation has given Grant High School senior Lilit Baldjyan a $2,000 scholarship for school activism and achievements in the community. Other students to be honored with $1,000 scholarships at a luncheon Aug. 17 at the Warner Center Marriott are Jane Y.
