Byline: DIANA PEYTON Community Columnist

It was a young playwright's dream.

Lauren Vally, a fifth-grade student from Erwin Street School, won the grand prize in the elementary division for her play, ``WW II.''

``When my teacher told me I won, I was speechless. I feel wonderful. I worked so hard on the play. People tell me I write well,'' Lauren said.

``I would like to write or act when I grow up, but right now I am focusing on acting,'' she said.

The 10-year-old based her play on a true story told to her by her grandmother, Olga Stolk-Greidanus, a Warner Springs, Calif., resident who came from Holland.

The play is set in Amsterdam. The lead character, also named Olga, is taken prisoner by the Nazi Schutzstaffel or S.S. for removing swastikas from the town buildings.

In jail the character named Olga meets two men who are attempting an escape. The three encounter a yawning guard who halts them as they climb down a ladder.

Lauren's heroine suggests that the trio sing the guard back to sleep.

The story ends with the guard asleep and the three thanking one another for help and friendship.
