CHIEF: CRIME STILL ON DECLINE.Byline: Jason Kandel Staff Writer Violent crime in Los Angeles Crime in Los Angeles has been a major problem in Southern California and concern for Angeleno residents since the early 20th Century. Crime has steadily decreased since the 1990's but since 2006, crime has increased. has plummeted 27 percent so far this year from 2004 levels, while homicides have dropped just 5 percent, Police Chief William Bratton said Thursday. During his monthly briefing of reporters, Bratton said 9,972 violent crimes were reported to the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation). ``We believe we are pretty much leading the nation in violent-crime reduction,'' said Bratton, adding that this was the fourth consecutive year of decreases. ``We're still very pleased with the progress we're making. It's our belief that a lot of the tactics that the department is deploying ... are in fact continuing to pay off.'' Bratton also said he plans to ask the City Council to change rules governing gov·ern v. gov·erned, gov·ern·ing, gov·erns v.tr. 1.
