Pressure on Los Angeles school The Los Angeles School of Urbanism is an academic movement emerged during the mid-1980s, loosely based at the University of Southern California and UCLA, that poses a challenge to the dominant Chicago School of Urbanism.  officials to hire Controller Laura Chick to audit the district intensified Tuesday as the City Council weighed whether to support the move and a San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Councilwoman Wendy Greuel Wendy Greuel is President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council representing the 2nd District. Greuel was elected in 2002 to fill the remainder of the term of Councilman Joel Wachs. She was elected in her own right in 2003 and reelected in 2007.  introduced a motion calling on Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. The action is needed because Chick has no authority to audit any LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  operations and must be asked to conduct such a review.

While school officials have said they welcome working with Chick, they have questioned whether her audit is needed because several audits already have been conducted and others are planned.

As part of its agreement with United Teachers of Los Angeles, the district has agreed to conduct an audit of its administrative operations. District officials said that cost was estimated at $200,000.

Chick has estimated her audit would cost $800,000.

Greuel's proposal is scheduled to be considered by the full council next week.

Meanwhile, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association called on the LAUSD to hire Chick.

VICA President Bob Scott said Chick has proven her office's objectivity and independence with previous audits of city agencies.

``The public deserves an audit done by an objective outside agency and VICA is convinced that the city controller's would be able to generate the most reliable information,'' Scott said.

Scott said he hoped an audit would examine the entire district as well as the performance and treatment of charter schools, small learning communities and other programs.
