CHICAGO SUN-TIMES PROMOTES CHARLES F. CHAMPION TO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES & MARKETING, OVERSEEING BOTH ADVERTISING AND CIRCULATION

CHICAGO, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chicago Sun-Times has named Charles F. Champion senior vice president of sales & marketing, with responsibility for all advertising, circulation and marketing.
Since October, Champion has served as senior vice president -- advertising sales & marketing.
In making the announcement, Michael J. Veitch, executive vice president and general manager of the Chicago Sun-Times, said, "Chuck's promotion was a logical move for us. Before moving to the Advertising department last fall, he spent 19 very effective years on the marketing and circulation side of the business, including two years as our own vice president of promotion."
Veitch noted, "Chuck's team created several successful Sun-Times marketing campaigns, including our `Sports with an Attitude' campaign. He also was involved in developing the Sun-Times' strategic response to the Tribune's price increase last fall. His successes in both departments bode well for all or our future advertising and consumer sales initiatives."
Champion's promotion marks the first time in recent memory that all of the newspaper's sales and marketing functions have been led by one individual. In addition to advertising and circulation sales, Champion is now responsible for all of the newspaper's marketing activities, including consumer advertising campaigns, market research, audiotex services, special events, corporate relations, community relations and special advertising sections.
"Chuck's new responsibilities reflect the convergence of all of our sales and marketing efforts," Veitch said. "It's another mark of our ongoing commitment to a highly focused and coordinated marketing effort for the Chicago Sun-Times."
Champion's appointment follows last week's announcement that Thomas L. Foster, senior vice president-consumer sales & marketing, is leaving the Sun-Times after three years at the helm of the Circulation department.
"The Chicago Sun-Times made great strides during Tom's three years here," Veitch said. "Our aggressive `Smart Choice' campaign last fall was developed hand-in-hand with Tom and his circulation team. And we got the results we wanted -- a large circulation swing in the Sun-Times' favor. Tom has built a series of steady circulation results here, and we wish him well in his future endeavors."
Champion, 39, joined the Chicago Sun-Times as vice president of promotion in 1990. In that role, he was responsible for all consumer and business marketing, including market research and special events, corporate communications and community relations activities.
Champion's previous experience includes 17 years in the southern California newspaper market, where he worked in the circulation, marketing and advertising areas of the Orange County Register, the Daily News of Los Angeles and the Tribune Co.'s Valley News/Daily News operation in Van Nuys, Calif.
A New Jersey native, Champion was reared in California. He is on the board of directors of the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Off the Street Club and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Chicago. He, his wife Vicki, and their three daughters reside in Winfield.
The Chicago Sun-Times is published by The Sun-Times Company, which also owns Pioneer Press and Star Publications, community newspaper groups in the Chicago suburbs.
