CHEST Renews Associations With MDL; Five-Year Deal Extends Academic Community's Access to CrossFire Databases.

Business Editors, Health/Medical Writers

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. & BATH, U.K.--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 20, 2002

MDL MDL - (Originally "Muddle"). C. Reeve, Carl Hewitt and Gerald Sussman, Dynamic Modeling Group, MIT ca. 1971. Intended as a successor to Lisp, and a possible base for Planner-70. Basically LISP 1.5 with data types and arrays.  Information Systems, Inc., the recognized leader in discovery informatics for the life sciences and chemistry in industry and academia, its affiliate MDL Information Systems GmbH, and CHEST, the negotiation and license management Service of EduServ, a not-for-profit organization and registered charity in the United Kingdom which works for the benefit of education, have signed an agreement that will provide members of the education community as given below with access to CrossFire A multi-GPU interface from ATI for connecting two ATI display adapters together for faster graphics rendering on one monitor. CrossFire machines require PCI Express slots, a CrossFire-enabled motherboard and, depending on which models are used, either a pair of ATI Radeon adapters or one  Beilstein and CrossFire Gmelin databases until October 2006.

Under the agreements, staff members and students at participating academic institutions in the U.K., the Republic of Ireland, and Scandinavia will be able to electronically search vast MDL databases for organic, inorganic, and organometallic organometallic /or·ga·no·me·tal·lic/ (-me-tal´ik) consisting of a metal combined with an organic radical, used particularly for a compound in which the metal is linked directly to a carbon atom.  chemical information, including chemical structures and reactions, associated chemical and physical properties, and detailed pharmacological and ecological data. It specialised in technical and scientific subjects and was a major centre for research.  (UMIST UMIST University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UK) ) will host the product service.

The Agreement has been achieved as a result of a close collaboration with the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC JISC Joint Information Systems Committee (UK)
JISC Japan Industrial Standards Committee
JISC Joint Industry Safety Committee
), the organization that promotes innovative application and use of information systems and information technology in further and higher education across the UK. The JISC in this case is underwriting the cost of providing access to CrossFire from the University of Manchester's "MIMAS" Service. MIMAS provided this service for five years, during which time it saw the number of participating institutions rise from 50 to more than 80.

By negotiating agreements on the basis of national and international consortia for the academic community, CHEST makes data and software more affordable for institutions that previously were unable to justify individual access. "Through site licenses to institutions, this agreement provides staff and students with unlimited -- but controlled -- access to vital information," said Senior Contracts Officer Emma Thompson of CHEST. "Renewing this agreement was a priority for us because of the proven value of CrossFire to academics, which has been demonstrated over the previous five years."

Consulting the chemical information and literature citations in the CrossFire databases is a necessary precursor to research or development in many fields, including pharmaceutical, life science, and materials science. The CrossFire Beilstein database contains over 8 million organic compounds, over 9 million reactions, and 1.7 million citations; CrossFire Gmelin contains over 1.5 million inorganic and organometallic compounds, 1.3 million reactions, and 1 million citations. The CrossFire databases are the most comprehensive, electronically searchable resources of their kind.

"At MDL we are proud of the exceptional quality and accessibility of chemical data in CrossFire Beilstein and CrossFire Gmelin," said Lars Barfod, executive vice president and chief business officer for MDL. "We are always pleased when we have an opportunity to provide the academic community with broad access to this essential information."

The agreement with CHEST comprises access to CrossFire Beilstein and CrossFire Gmelin, Beilstein Commander, AutoNom 2000, CrossFire Web, and LitLink/Pro. The LitLink/Pro service is planned to begin in February 2002. The CrossFire Web service will be provided by MIMAS within six months of the release of CrossFire Web for academic use by MDL.

Beilstein Commander and CrossFire Web are software used to search and access the databases. AutoNom is a program, integrated with Beilstein Commander, which generates IUPAC IUPAC: see International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.  names for chemical structures. LitLink/Pro allows the user to link directly from citations found in the CrossFire databases to the corresponding online full-text articles. (Note: LitLink does not grant additional access rights to such articles).

Additional information about the agreement is available on the CHEST Website at www.chest.ac.uk/datasets/mdl.html.
