CHERNE MEDICAL APPOINTS VICE CHAIRMAN, DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL CENTER TO ITS MEDICAL ADVISORY BOARD
 MINNEAPOLIS, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Cherne Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHNE) announced today the appointment of Joseph S. Alpert, M.D., F.A.C.C., vice chairman, Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, to its medical advisory board.
 "Dr. Alpert's extensive clinical research and academic appointments in cardiology provide valuable counsel and insight as we expand the clinical utilization of the Variance Cardiograph," said David Printy, chairman, president and CEO. The Variance Cardiograph is a non-invasive diagnostic instrument that can identify coronary artery disease (CAD) without stressing a patient. The system is especially effective in detecting CAD in patients who cannot undergo a stress test, such as the elderly, individuals with heartbeat irregulatories and the physically disabled.
 Alpert has held a number of appointments with the American Heart Association and is currently editor, Newsletter, Council on Clinical Cardiology. His current hospital appointments include chief and vice chairman, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Mass.; consultant, Division of Cardiology, West Roxbury Veterans Administration Hospital, in West Roxbury, Mass.; and has received numerous teaching awards, including the William Osler Master Teacher Award, Cardiology Division, University of Miami School of Medicine.
 In 1969, Alpert graduated Cum Laude from Harvard Medical School and in 1963 he received his bachelor's degree in biology from Yale University, Magna Cum Laude. Alpert, a member of the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School since 1978, was appointed vice chairman of the Department of Medicine in 1990.
