 CHENAULT ELECTED TO QUAKER OATS' BOARD
 CHICAGO, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Kenneth I. Chenault, president of


the American Express Consumer Card Group, USA, has been elected a director of The Quaker Oats Company (NYSE: OAT), it was announced today. He becomes the 11th outside director of the 14-member board.
 William D. Smithburg, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "We're delighted that Ken Chenault has agreed to serve on Quaker's board. He has an outstanding reputation as a marketer, strategic planner and customer oriented executive in the global financial services industry, and we're looking forward to working with him."
 Chenault joined American Express in 1981 as director-Strategic Planning, Travel Related Services. Other positions he has held since include vice president-marketing, Merchandise Services; senior vice president and general manager-Merchandise Services and executive vice president and general manager-Personal Card Division. He was named to his current position at American Express in 1989. Prior to American Express, he was a management consultant with Bain & Company and an attorney with Rogers & Wells.
 Chenault holds a B.S. degree from Bowdoin College and a J.D.from Harvard Law School.
 Chenault also serves as a corporate director of Brooklyn Union Gas Company. His civic activities include serving as a trustee for Prep, a program to identify, educate and prepare talented and motivated minority students for leadership roles in society; he also serves on the boards of Bowdoin College, International House and Junior Achievement of New York City.
 Chenault has received honors from Moorehouse College, Morgan State University, the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith and Black Enterprise magazine.
