CHEMICAL SPILL FORCES WORKERS TO EXIT BUILDING.

A toxic chemical Any chemical which, through its chemical action on life processes, can cause death, temporary incapacitation, or permanent harm to humans or animals. The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) provides fire protection and emergency response services for the unincorporated areas of Ventura County, California, and for six other cities within the county.

"We wanted to make sure that there were no further exposure to civilians and to minimize the potential for ignition, so we isolated the area," said department spokesman Joe Luna.

 and Imaging were evacuated, while employees at adjacent businesses were asked to stay indoors and close their windows.

The spill was discovered about 8:10 a.m. inside a chemical storage room by a company employee who noticed several gallons of the chemical on the floor, Luna said.

Chlorobenzene was used by employees to clean electronics parts in the telecommunications company, Luna said. The chemical is colorless, emits an almond-like odor and if inhaled can cause damage to the lungs and liver, Luna said.

No injuries were reported, although one worker fell ill after inhaling the chemical. The worker was treated and released on the scene by paramedics.
