CHEMICAL LIME CO. TO SUPPLY LIME FOR HARRISON STATION SCRUBBERS

FORT WORTH, Texas, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Chemical Lime Co. today announced the signing of a long-term contract with Monongahela Power Co., one of the operating companies of the Allegheny Power System (APS), to supply 400,000 tons of lime a year to the Harrison Power Station near Shinnston, West Virginia. Chemical Lime's "MAG-ON-DEMAND(R)" product will be used in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems (scrubbers) under construction at the station which will enable the APS companies to comply with Phase I of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.
The scrubbers will remove at least 98% of the sulfur dioxide (SO2) released when coal is burned to generate electricity.
Delivery of lime will begin in July. Full-scale operation of the scrubbers will begin by Jan. 1, 1995.
The three-unit, 1920-megawatt station is the largest in the Allegheny Power System, which also includes The Potomac Edison Co. and West Penn Power Co. Together, they provide electricity to about 1.3 million customers in parts of Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
Magnesium-enhanced lime FGD technology is the accepted industry standard for maximizing SO2 removal from higher sulfur coals. Chemical Lime's MAG-ON-DEMAND lime further enhances this process by optimizing the lime quality and magnesium concentration to cost-effectively fit the many stages of a FGD operation.
"Chemical Lime has made a strong commitment to the utility industry, and this major account reinforces our solutions-oriented approach by offering MAG-ON-DEMAND lime," stated Tom Chambers, chairman and CEO of Chemical Lime. "Our personnel are already working with Harrison's operators to ensure successful implementation and operation of this new FGD system."
Chemical Lime Co. is North America's leading producer and supplier of lime-based products for industrial, municipal and environmental applications. Chemical Lime Co., headquartered in Fort Worth, has more than 30 locations in North America.
