CHELETTE DAZED BY TEAM'S LOSS; FIRST-ROUND UPSET ENDS STREAK.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

His office phone was ringing and Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  men's basketball coach Newton Chelette figured he'd put a light spin on what was a sobering end to his team's season.

``First-round loser speaking,'' Chelette replied to the caller. It was something he never had to consider during the first eight years of his tenure with the Marauders.

All joking aside, AVC's ninth season under Chelette ended with an 87-84 loss to Allan Hancock College Allan Hancock College is a California public community college located in Santa Maria in northern Santa Barbara County. Approximately 13,000 credit and more than 5,500 noncredit and community services students enroll each semester.  on Saturday in the opening round of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  regional playoffs.

With the sixth seed's defeat to the 27th-ranked Bulldogs, an impressive streak came to an end. A Chelette-coached AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

team had advanced past the first round in each of the previous eight years.

``We were the only team in Southern California to advance to the second round all of those years,'' Chelette said. ``While that may not seem important (to most people), it does mean a great deal to us. Even Ventura, Cerritos and Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  and all of the storied programs hadn't done that. We were at eight and lost (Saturday). That hurt.''

With that said, Chelette pondered the following question:

Shouldn't a 21-10 finish with just two returning players from a 30-win, state championship participant be cause for celebration?

``If you were close to the program, and you knew all the things that we fought all year, and realized we had just two players back from a 30-5 state tournament team, the conclusion would be it was a successful season,'' Chelette said. ``If you ask any player on the team or the coaching staff, we know it wasn't successful.''

Chelette figured two starters off last season's dream team, eventual Foothill Conference MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. He played college football for Rice University.  and seasoned point guard Trevor Beal and a talented recruiting class would be enough to at least challenge the dominance of Chelette's winningest group in his first eight seasons.

At times, this edition of the Marauders played up to its impressive credentials. Of the 32 teams forming the Southern California Regional Playoff Tournament, few if any could boast more quality wins than AVC.

On that same subject, few of the bracket's top eight teams suffered as many losses against teams with losing records.

Aside from the stunning regular-season defeats to Canyons and Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:
  • Río Hondo, a town in the Guatemalan department of Zacapa.
  • Rio Hondo (Belize), a river which forms much of the border between Belize and Mexico.
  • Rio Hondo (California), a tributary of the Los Angeles River in the U.S. state of California.
, none of these was more damaging than Saturday night's loss to 12-18 Hancock, which went 1-1 against the Marauders during the regular-season.

AVC showed its good side early that fateful night, racing to a 22-7 lead. But it collapse in the second half.

``When we jumped out and went up 22-7, Hancock called a timeout, I looked at (assistant coaches Brad Wiggs and Barry Green Barry Green is a U.S. orchestral and solo double bass player and teacher. He was the principal bassist for the Cincinnati Symphony. A contemporary of people such as Gary Karr, he has developed and publicized his own method for double bass. ) and said, `I don't like this. This team will relax,' '' Chelette said.

``History tells us that we relax, and I mentioned that in the timeout, but we quit playing aggressively on defense.''

That's when the Marauders' dark side reigned. They missed 21 of 28 field-goal attempts the final 20 minutes and ended up a miserable 27 of 44 from the foul line foul line

for the game. They shot just 39 percent from the field despite pulling down a season-high 23 offensive rebounds.

``Making free throws is one of the little things you have to do to be successful. . . . There's no way we should have that many offensive rebounds and shoot that poorly. Those numbers don't match,'' Chelette said. ``It's almost like a bad dream. You shake them, but you can't wake them up.''

Chelette looks back on this season feeling baffled, failing to find the answers to his team's inconsistent play all season.

``I feel very empty because I couldn't push the right buttons,'' he said. ``That gives you a better opportunity to win.''

Though AVC loses Burrell's explosive scoring punch to the University of Nevada University of Nevada could refer to either of the universities in the Nevada System of Higher Education:
  • University of Nevada, Reno (UNR)

and Beal's leadership ability to a probable Division I team to be determined later (Beal has yet to make a decision), the future is bright.

All eight freshmen should be improved as sophomores. Center Le'Tre Kelly and guard Ziaire Williams could develop into Division I recruits.

Six-foot-seven post players Lance Silvester and Carlos Wheeler and guard Michael Paul Michael Paul may refer to:
  • Michael Paul, Trinidad and Tobago athlete
  • Michael Paul, German handball player
 made solid contributions.

Beal's point-guard spot is Miles Degruy's to lose. The New Orleans native, who boasts an intense work ethic, should blossom with more playing time.

Marc Buckner and Anthony Calogero are perfect role players.

Throw in some talented redshirts and the Marauders have most of the ingredients to continue Chelette's streak of nine consecutive 20-win seasons.

A longer stay in the postseason would be nice, too.
