Hanna Kaplar's love of speed doesn't come from fast cars. Its comes from the cheetah cheetah (chē`tə), carnivore of the cat family, Acinonyx jubatus, native to Africa S of the Sahara and SW Asia as far east as India. .

 15-year-old Palmdale girl has been saving her money from baby-sitting jobs, hoping to help save the endangered species endangered species, any plant or animal species whose ability to survive and reproduce has been jeopardized by human activities. During her trip to Namibia, Africa, which she is hoping to take next summer, Kaplar plans to educate people who hunt the animal for its skin and body parts.

Throughout the world there are just 40,000 cheetahs left, Kaplar said. ``They used to live in India and Africa for many years. Now there's barely any in either.''

In Africa, Kaplar said poachers have been setting traps and killing cheetahs. The swift animal also is not a natural fighter and can't always defend itself.

``The cheetah isn't built to fight, it's built to run,'' she said. ``So they tend to run from their predators because they can't fight.''

 Kaplar, Africans find cheetahs pleasant and easy to train and keep them as pets. ``They're very timid, and they're not aggressive or dominate at all.''

For the past three years, the Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Founded in 1964, it is the third oldest comprehensive high school in the Antelope Valley High School District (AVHSD).  student has been holding fund-raisers at her home in hopes of getting more people interested in her passion.

Kaplar realized her love of animals after her mother arranged a meeting for her with actress Tippi Hedren, founder and owner of the Shambala wild animal preserve in Acton.

Kaplar hopes to follow Hedren's lead and work with animals in the entertainment industry.
