CHEERLEADING CHAMPS HAVE REASON TO SHOUT.

 squad recently took first place in West Coast competition of the National Cheerleading Association at Disneyland.

The nine members of the squad have plenty to cheer about. In seven years, their school's varsity cheerleading squad has placed in the top seven in some 35 competitions.

Collectively, the squad this year touts a 3.74 grade-point average.

Seniors Cristy Alford, Amber Catherine Goodrich and Brianna Parisian have each been accepted to more than one four-year university.

Last year Marcus and two other Portola students, Severo Guardado Jr. and Zachary Gutterman, shared second place in the county and third place in the state for their entry on Henry Ford's automobile line.

Local academic achievers have been honored for their performance.

Winners in the semifinals of the Emerging Young Artists Awards program include: David Lee of Northridge in music, Juliana McCoy of Thousand Oaks in visual arts, Diana Wyenn of Thousand Oaks in theater, Elizabeth Kim of La Canada Flintridge in music and Karla Menjivar of Burbank in theater.

The final awards showcase will be April 29 at Thorne Hall Auditorium at Occidental College.

And some local teens are celebrating a new beginning. A rites of academic passage ceremony will be held for some college-bound teens today at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Participating local students include Lauren Criddle of Calabasas, Simeon Cooper of Pacoima and Aaron Armelin of Canoga Park.

The sponsors emphasize parental support and participation for academic success.

Two Valley residents are sharing a Woman of the Year title.

Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, bestowed the title on Jane Y. Lee, 18, in the 40th Assembly District.

The Granada Hills High School Granada Hills Charter High School (Granada Hills High School) is a public, charter, co-educational, secondary school consisting of students in grades 9-12. The school colors are green, black, and white.  student started a community organization called Love Kerchiefs to provide pretty scarves for cancer patients being treated with chemotherapy.

In the 38th District, Assemblyman Keith Richman, R-Northridge, singled out Debbie Forstall for her community work and her development of the nonprofit Hallervoden-Spatz Syndrome Association.
