CHECKUP : NEWS, TIPS AND TRENDS THEY HAVEN'T RESOLVED HOW TO ACHIEVE THOSE RESOLUTIONS.

Less than half of Americans who make New Year's resolutions have developed a plan of action to help them achieve their objectives, a new survey shows.

In the nationwide telephone poll of 1,000 adults, researchers also found that nearly 60 percent of respondents' resolutions involved improving their health.

However, when asked about what steps they were going to take to meet their goals, preventive measures such as quitting smoking, getting a physical exam, scheduling a mammogram mammogram /mam·mo·gram/ (mam´o-gram) a radiograph of the breast.

``The survey suggests that a majority of people who make health-related resolutions aimed at better health don't have a specific action plan that includes these important preventive steps. This is surprising, since prevention is the foundation for good health and well-being,'' said Dr. Jeffrey Koplan, chief medical research officer for Prudential HealthCare.

In order to keep New Year's health resolutions, people should set realistic goals for themselves, Koplan recommended.

Prudential HealthCare also offers the following advice for helping people stay healthy in the new year:

Breathe easier: The first noninvasive test for diagnosing the bacterial infection that causes stomach ulcers has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

It's now accepted that most stomach ulcers are caused by the bacteria called H. pylori. Detection of the bacteria is important to ensure proper treatment of the ulcer. Until now, the only way to confirm H. pylori as the cause in individual cases was by blood tests or by invasively taking a stomach lining sample.

The new procedure is a breath test called Meretek UBT Breath Test UBT breath test GI disease A noninvasive breath test for detecting H pylori. See Helicobacter pylori. .
