Put on by the academy's students as part of a senior project, the six-hour event featured about 40 vendors, including local hospitals and clinics, and lectures on topics ranging from teen pregnancy to smoking. ``We all went to health fairs, and we noticed that there were ones for families and seniors but none directed to teens,'' said Arlene Lopez, 18, chairwoman of the event and a 1995 Palmdale graduate. ``Since it's a large population, we wanted to hit them with all the positive things that they can do.'' About 500 students are enrolled in the school's health career academy, which helps prepare students for college and careers in the health field. Upper-level students gain experience by working in hospitals or clinics. The vendors offered information on health as well as career opportunities. Also at the fair were representatives from the Sheriff's and Fire departments, and recruiters from the Air Force and Navy. Before Lopez enrolled in the health academy, she was an unmotivated student who missed school and had bad grades. She signed up after friends told her about it. ``It gave me choices that I didn't know I had available to myself,'' said Lopez, who wants to become either a pediatrician pe·di·a·tri·cian or pe·di·at·rist n. A specialist in pediatrics. or a flight nurse in the Navy. ``I was a student (like those) that I am hoping the health fair will turn around.''
