The Leona Valley Cherry Growers are gearing up for the season and will kick off festivities fes·tiv·i·ty

 with a Cherry Parade, craft fair, bike ride and barbecue June 10. The parade begins at 9 a.m. so plan to arrive in the Leona Valley (12 miles west of Palmdale) by 8:30 a.m.

More than 20 orchards will offer consumers the opportunity to pick their own cherries. Most orchards provide all the equipment needed for picking the fruit, including buckets, bags and containers. U-pick cherry prices will range in the neighborhood of $1.50 per pound. Cherries should be available through the second week of July.

New magazine debuts

A new publication - Better Homes and Gardens Hometown Cooking magazine - debuted with the June issue, which is on newsstands now. Published bimonthly bi·month·ly

 (the size is 5 1/4 by 8 3/4 inches), the magazine - designed for those who are passionate about cooking - is devoted to recipes from community cookbooks and the people who contributed them along with recipes from festivals and other good home cooks. The editors of the magazine will be traveling the country in search of delicious local dishes.

The June issue includes 50 recipes ranging from meals from residents of Kansas City Kansas City, two adjacent cities of the same name, one (1990 pop. 149,767), seat of Wyandotte co., NE Kansas (inc. 1859), the other (1990 pop. 435,146), Clay, Jackson, and Platte counties, NW Mo.
