But Jim Waldorf, the head of California's largest gun maker, Lorcin Engineering Co., defends its products, saying his firm simply offers what customers want to buy.

``We are filling a consumer demand and we operate within the law,'' he said. ``We sell more guns than most companies. It only makes sense that our guns will show up in traces more often.''

``If these guns end up in the hands of juveniles or criminals then someone else is obviously doing something wrong. We don't do any advertising at all. We don't look to sell our product to juveniles or criminals. We strictly sell to wholesalers,'' he said.

He describes his firm's 9 mm pistol as ``a very politically correct politically correct Politically sensitive adjective Referring to language reflecting awareness and sensitivity to another person's physical, mental, cultural, or other disadvantages or deviations from a norm; a person is not mentally retarded, but  gun that is more expensive and much bigger'' than the so-called Saturday night special handguns criticized by lawmakers.

The 10-shot, 7.5-inch, 36-ounce weapon will continue to appeal to Lorcin's bargain-basement shoppers. The handgun retails for about $160, compared with the $600-to-$900 price tags on similar guns.
