Meridian Healthcare, an I-trax company, has opened three facilities for UnumProvident, the world's leading provider of disability insurance. The Health Resource Centers (HRCs) focus on wellness and disease management to support the company's healthcare strategy. The three facilities serve 3,200 UnumProvident employees in Portland, Maine Portland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Maine, with a 2004 population of 63,882. Portland is Maine's cultural, social and economic capital. Tourists are drawn to Portland's historic Old Port district along Portland Harbor, which is at the mouth of the Fore River and part , 700 in Worcester, Mass. and 3,200 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Following a merger of three companies in 2000, UnumProvident evaluated its healthcare offerings for the newly-combined employee base. It was offering its employees on-site healthcare services, ranging from an on-site work-related clinic to an acute care center, at different locations. UnumProvident identified gaps in such on-site services and the lack of integration among programs, and as a result the company developed a strategy aimed at promoting overall well being and managing risks and chronic disease. As part of its strategy, UnumProvident contracted with CHD Meridian Healthcare to operate, manage and staff its HRCs.

"In aligning all of our services with our healthcare strategy, we realized that healthcare education was a key element missing from our employee healthcare offerings," said Sally Saunders, director of Health and Group Insurance at UnumProvident. "Our Health Resource Centers are a new approach designed to provide our employees access to health professionals that encourage employees to engage in managing their own health. We also see this as a major opportunity to link up with physician groups in three geographic areas, facilitating communication regarding our employees' health and promoting education classes at the HRCs."

All HRCs offer education sessions on such topics as diabetes, weight reduction and cardiovascular health. They also provide individualized in·di·vid·u·al·ize

The nurses track the individuals' progress and direct them to appropriate educational and support programs in the community. Furthermore, each month the HRCs feature an overall health education theme (i.e. allergies), as well as standard programs on nutrition, education, physical fitness and smoking cessation smoking cessation Public health Temporary or permanent halting of habitual cigarette smoking; withdrawal therapies–eg, hypnosis, psychotherapy, group counseling, exposing smokers to Pts with terminal lung CA and nicotine chewing gum are often ineffective. .

"UnumProvident is a forward-thinking company," said Frank A Martin, chairman of I-trax. "We are excited about this new approach in which the primary focus of the CHD Meridian staff is as health educators for UnumProvident employees -- providing individual and group motivation and education for self care. With the rapid increase in healthcare costs, UnumProvident is focusing on promoting and maintaining health, reducing health risks and managing chronic illnesses to keep their employees healthy."
