CHATTER: WOODBRIDGE FINISH ALL CROSSED UP.Byline: Ross Siler and Heather Gripp Staff Writers To Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. The Antelope Valley High cross country coach Chris Broskoff, the results from Saturday night's Woodbridge Invitational boys' sweepstakes race weren't worth the paper they were printed on. ``They really screwed up,'' Broskoff said. ``I know for a fact they did.'' The Antelopes of Lancaster, ranked eighth in Southern Section Div. II, officially finished 18th as a team in the marquee race at the Irvine invitational. But Broskoff is convinced organizers incorrectly recorded the order of runners at the finish line. For example, junior Christian Navarro, the Antelopes' usual No. 5 runner, was given a 193rd place finish and a time of 22 minutes, 19 seconds. However, Broskoff timed his runner crossing the line in 17:06. As a result, instead of counting Navarro as Antelope Valley's fifth runner, Broskoff's sophomore son, Nick, became No. 5 at 18:51. The Antelopes' combined team time then went in the books at 81:51, while the coach had it at 80:08. Race organizers had numerous problems at the finish, where the large number of runners entering the chute caused a backup that forced some racers to stop before crossing the line. One coach described the finish afterward as a ``dogpile.'' ``The times are suspect starting about halfway through,'' Woodbridge coach George Varvas said, ``and the reason for that is there were so many kids coming in, the timers lost track. But there shouldn't be any discrepancy in the placing.'' Afterward, the individual results from the race were delayed approximately 30 minutes. Varvas added that he would limit the number of entrants in the sweepstakes races next year. Broskoff said the Antelopes would have finished three to five spots higher in the team standings had the results been accurate - an important jump considering the number of top teams competing. But Broskoff said he probably will return to Woodbridge next year in spite of all the confusion. ``The kids liked the course,'' Broskoff said. ``We got three medals and five personal-best (times) off that meet. We'd like the results to be right, but we still did pretty well.'' ... L.A. ATHLETES OF THE WEEK MARLON LUCKY Senior North Hollywood After suffering what was feared to be a head injury but turned out to be a sprained back in Week 1, Lucky was questionable to play Friday. North Hollywood coach Brad Ratcliff said there were some things Lucky physically couldn't do. But taking over a game wasn't one of them. The resilient junior nearly single-handedly defeated Chatsworth 34-17 with 243 yards and four touchdowns on 18 carries. ALEXANDRIA JOHNSON Freshman Westlake Johnson is a freshman in name only, as she proved with her versatile performance against La Reina of Thousand Oaks on Friday, getting 12 kills to help lead the Warriors to a 25-15, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory. ``She plays more like a junior or senior,'' said Westlake coach Doug Magorien. ``It was a team win for us, but the way she stepped up as a first-year player was really something special.'' The Westlake-La Reina rivalry has grown the past few years, Westlake being a large public school and La Reina a 390-student private school. The teams have split their matchups the past three years, and Johnson, 6-foot, figures to be a part of some big matches against the Regents. Johnson is emerging as one of the region's top players. THEN AND NOW Hart has a 6-2 record against Westlake since 1993, but this year's game - with two top quarterbacks and Westlake (3-0) ranked No. 1 and Hart (0-2) struggling - bears a striking resemblance to an epic game from 1996 won by Westlake. Here's a look back: An outstretched out·stretch tr.v. out·stretched, out·stretch·ing, out·stretch·es To stretch out; extend. outstretched Adjective arm. A steady hand. A quick eye for the ball. Sometimes such minuscule things as these make all the difference in a football game. So it was Friday night at Westlake, where Warriors defensive back Bret Young knocked down a 2-point conversion try with 43 seconds left and then covered an onside kick. And the No. 1-ranked Warriors saved a 26-24 nonleague victory over No. 7 Hart at Warriors Stadium. In a game in which the talented arms of quarterback Travis Carroll of the Indians (1-2) and Casey Preston of the Warriors (3-0) were the showcase items, it was Young's anonymous right wing that made the final difference. With the Indians trailing by just two points after a Carroll TD pass with 43 seconds left, Young dived in front of wide receiver Scott Collins to bat away a 2-point (conversion). - Originally published in the Daily News on Sept. 28, 1996.
