It's always better to have too many options than none at all, but still, Pepperdine point guard Shandrika Lee wonders what might have been had she decided to play softball instead of basketball.

One day after school, a basketball coach saw Lee shooting on the playground and asked her to come out for the team.

Although she was accomplished enough in softball to be invited to the Junior Olympic Team tryouts as a sophomore, Lee enjoyed playing basketball more and decided to take a chance.

``I think the thing that drove me away from softball was that at the high school level, nobody could hit off Keira and I played outfield so it got really boring,'' Lee said. ``But in basketball, I really started from scratch. I had to work on everything. I barely got recruited out of high school because I only started playing organized ball my junior year.''

Despite her inexperience, Lee has had a standout career for the Waves and is looking to rebound her senior year after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the 11th game of last season. Before the injury, Lee was averaging a team-high 17.6 points a game.

Lee says that her surgically repaired left knee feels better than ever, but she's out for at least another week with a sprained right knee, suffered in practice two weeks ago. The Waves will host Stanford at 5 p.m. Friday in their season opener. ...

With Fernandes out, Byrd had to take over more of the offense. She had a game-high 20 kills to lead Taft past Garfield of Los Angeles in the City playoff quarterfinals Thursday. Taft will host Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  of Pacific Palisades tonight at 7 in the semifinals.

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

Basketball practice officially began Saturday, and the Harvard-Westlake of Studio City boys' team might be one of the area's best teams of all time. Here's a look at another outstanding area high school team:

``Cleveland High School, led by three NCAA Division I-bound players, has been rated No. 1 in the Daily News preseason basketball ratings.

The Cavaliers, upset in the first round of last season's City 4-A playoffs, have much better offensive players. Their top players are 5-foot-11 guard Adonis Jordan (bound for Kansas), 6-5 forward Lucious Harris (Cal State Long Beach) and 6-6 center Warren Harrell (New Mexico State).

Cleveland's superior depth features three-point specialist Eddie Hill, a transfer from Burroughs, 6-6 center Trenton Cornelius, the co-JV MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip. , and 6-6 freshman Randy Coleman.''
