Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

Come Jan. 10, Village Christian of Sun Valley will raise a banner in honor of having the smartest girls' cross country team in the state.

Crusaders coach Fred Largent said an individual sport like cross country allows for top individual efforts on the course and in the classroom. He calls that ``the mindset mind·set or mind-set

 of hard work.''

``You have to look within yourself to become better athletically,'' Largent said. ``A lot of heart can make you a great cross country runner.''

The team will be honored during the school's Jan. 10 chapel, when the school will hand out individual certificates and raise the banner. ...

Proof attention to fundamentals pays off: The Verdugo Hills boys' basketball team had 57 rebounds this week against San Fernando, including 19 offensive rebounds.

The Dons have one 6-foot-5 player, Lucas Macauley and several 6-2 and 6-3 players, Daniel Figueroa, Daniel Dingman and Luis Cortes. Against a smaller San Fernando team, the players were able to box out or penetrate the zone and get the ball. Figueroa had 18 rebounds, Macauley and Dingman had 10 each and Cortes had nine.
