CHATTER: VAULT VERY GOOD TO VERDUGO COACH.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

Fred Kogler was never a pole vaulter but he certainly made his mark in the event.

Kogler, the track coach at Verdugo Hills High in Tujunga for 30 years, recently announced his retirement after 33 years in the L.A. Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts. . He also coached cross country for 28 years.

All told, he won 30 league titles and sent nine track athletes to the state meet. Of the nine, five were pole vaulters, and one, Shane Hackett, won the City and state titles in 2000.

. ``I shipped them out to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
or Birmingham (High in Lake Balboa).''

It was there the vaulters gleaned knowledge from Anthony Curran, a UCLA assistant coach and former vaulter.

Hackett also reached the state meet in 1999, finishing sixth. The others who made it: Justin Van Fleet (1991, third place); Jeremy Pope Jeremy Pope (b. 1938) is a New Zealand Anti-Corruption Crusader and travel writer.

(1996), Jerry Cunningham (1997) and Joe Bosco (2001). The latter three failed to clear a height at state.

Kogler also coached Evan Armstrong, who reached state in the shot put in 1998.

Over the years, Kogler has seen the dedication level drop among track athletes. In 1972, 100 boys tried out for the team. In 2002, it was only 30.

``Times have changed,'' said Kogler, 60. ``Guys didn't have to worry about jobs. Now, they miss practice, miss meets and think nothing of it.''

Kogler also loses athletes when coaches from other sports demand their athletes play that sport year-round. ...

The power in City boys' volleyball shifted several years ago to the Valley. Now, it's concentrated in the West Valley.

Three West Valley League teams, Chatsworth, Granada Hills and three-time defending-champion Taft of Woodland Hills, are alive in the semifinals, which will be at 7 tonight at Chatsworth and Taft.

This will be the seventh consecutive year a West Valley League team has reached the City final. If Chatsworth wins, it will be the first time two West Valley League teams will meet.

As always, Chatsworth is favored to beat University tonight. Taft-Granada Hills is the intriguing matchup. The winner will be the team that passes best.

Of course, the team that passes best usually wins. In this case, it's particularly critical, especially for Taft, which must feed experienced middle blocker Joel Rodstein to win.

Granada Hills, meanwhile, must pass well to spread the offense. The Highlanders have the better outside hitters in Kris Manansala and Taku Uechi, plus a decent middle in Eric Sulzinger.

Prediction: Granada Hills in five. Taft will put up a better fight than Monroe did last week, but the Highlanders have one of the best coaches in Tom Harp Tom Harp was a college football coach at Cornell, Duke, and Indiana State. From 1961 to 1965, he coached at Cornell, where he compiled a 19-23-3 record. From 1966 to 1970, he coached at Duke, where he compiled a 22-23-1 record. . They will return to the finals for the first time since winning the City title in 1997.

HEAD 2 HEAD

Matchup of the week:

JOEL RODSTEIN

Taft

Middle blocker

ERIC SULZINGER

Granada Hills

Middle blocker

Rodstein, a senior, is the heart and soul of Taft of Woodland Hills as it attempts to become the first team to win four City titles in a row. He's good for double-digit kills most nights, many of which help turn the momentum of the match toward Taft.

But like any middle blocker, Rodstein can't get his kills if his team can't pass to him, or if someone consistently blocks him. That's where Sulzinger comes in. He's a returning senior with plenty of experience. In one match this season, he blocked 25 balls. The Highlanders need that kind of effort from him tonight.

City Section semifinal, tonight, 7 p.m. at Taft High.
