He couldn't understand how they passed on a player like former Hart High of Newhall standout Chris Valaika.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Ashlee Trebilcock

Junior

Hart

Trebilcock hit the game-winning shot with four seconds left in top-ranked Hart's thrilling 64-62 victory over then-No. 5 Valencia on Friday night. She finished with a career-high 34 points on 13-of-21 shooting and eight assists.

Mike Hornbuckle

Senior

Oaks Christian

Hornbuckle enjoyed a remarkable week for the Lions, torching Malibu on Tuesday with 51 points, eight assists and eight rebounds, then following that up with a 29-point performance in a victory over Nordhoff of Ojai. Hornbuckle has one of the purest shots in the region, and when he's on - as he's been recently - opponents are almost defenseless.

UP AND COMER

Sean Brandon

Montclair Prep

Brandon, an eighth-grader, is averaging 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists on the Montclair Prep Junior High team. He's also an outstanding football player for the flag football team.

``There seems to be no let-up with the Cleveland High School basketball team.

The Daily News' top-ranked team jumped to a 21-point first-quarter lead and easily defeated Canoga Park, 84-65, in a Northwest Valley Conference game Wednesday afternoon at Cleveland.

Patrick McCook and Andre Chevalier led Cleveland (14-4) with 13 points a piece and Eddie Hill scored 12 points in a victory that is the Cavaliers' ninth in a row and 13th in their last 14 games.''
