Oregon State received football commitments from two area players over the weekend.

Standout Chaminade High of West Hills offensive lineman Adam Speer, who is considered among California's top football prospects, committed while on an official visit last weekend.

``I really like the coaching staff,'' Speer said. ``I connected well with the coaches and the players. Plus, they have a good business program.''

of Taft of Woodland Hills also committed after visiting this weekend.

Bates' commitment is a soft one. He still plans on visiting Arizona State in two weeks. He also is taking the SAT again this weekend and needs 20 more points to qualify for Oregon State.

Bates said the Beavers gave him a written offer during the trip, telling him he could play outside linebacker or safety.

``I really liked it up there,'' Bates said. ``I liked the surroundings, plus my boy Brandon Browner Brandon Browner (born August 2, 1984) is a CFL cornerback for the Calgary Stampeders. His speed and competitive effort have made him a fan favorite in his short time with the team.

``I'm so thankful for everything my parents have done to help me get to this point,'' Wilson said. ``I wouldn't be doing any of this without them.''

Wilson led Loyola in tackles (101) and was the team's third-leading receiver on offense.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Nick Young

Senior

Cleveland

Young finally got his victory over friend and rival Jordan Farmar of Taft of Woodland Hills. Young scored 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 68-49 victory over the Toreadors in a West Valley League game Friday. With the victory, Cleveland (16-2, 2-1) tied Taft (14-3, 2-1) for first in the league standings. Just as importantly, it ends Young's losing streak to Farmar at three games. The two will continue their battle in college when Young attends USC and Farmar goes to UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
. Young also had 33 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots in a victory over El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Chaminade

Frazier had only five points in Chaminade of West Hills' 57-55 upset of then-No. 7 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks on Tuesday. But she made the play of the game by stealing an inbounds in·bounds

Chaminade

The Chaminade girls' junior varsity basketball team is 12-0 and 3-0 in the West Valley League and Vest, a forward, and Anaya, a shooting guard, are reasons why.

Coach Nicole Rose said: ``It's hard to pick our best player, let alone our best players. We're winning because the whole team is playing well. I'm so proud of them.''

In order to decide which players would be featured in this article, Rose had the team vote.

THEN AND NOW

Here's a look at the beginning career of one of the Southland's more accomplished coaches, Jim Harrick, who is a scout for the Denver Nuggets Nuggets can refer to several branches of interest:

  • , a Rhino Records box set of non-U.S.

 and Georgia.

``Before this season began, Pepperdine coach Jim Harrick was expected to entrust the offensive leadership role to Marty Wilson, a 6-foot-3 junior from Simi Valley who played sparingly last season on a team loaded with talented guards. Harrick planned to blend Wilson's leadership with the raw talent of newcomers Ed ``Topper'' Allen, Craig Davis and Donny Moore. But plans for the use of his own son, Jim (Jimmy) Harrick Jr., were limited.

The Waves won their first two games, but lost their next six and eventually carried a 4-8 record into West Coast Athletic Conference play.

The first two conference games - losses on the road to San Francisco (61-54) and Santa Clara (76-50) - were nightmares. The Waves were frustrated.

``I always knew what Dad wanted done in the offense,'' the younger Harrick said, ``But let's face it, I was the last guard on the team to get a chance to start. I kept thinking to myself, `If he'd only give me a chance, I would prove to him I could spark the offense.' ''

Jim Harrick listened and his son has started the last four games. Pepperdine (7-11) has won three of its last four games.

``Call it S and S,'' the coach said. ``If I weren't so stubborn and stupid, he would have been starting before now. And our record would be better than it is now.''

A former star guard at Newbury Park High School, Jimmy Harrick got off to a rough start at Pepperdine when he enrolled there as a freshman in 1983.

After a year of academic struggling, Jimmy transferred to Utah Technical School in Provo, where he could concentrate on improving his grades. In the offseason, he improved his abilities in basketball.

Jim Harrick said his proudest moment as a coach came last Saturday when his son sparked the Waves to a 93-84 win over Loyola Marymount in Firestone Fieldhouse. In 23 minutes of play, Jimmy scored 11 points (including 3 of 3 on three-point shots), gave out eight assists, grabbed two rebounds and a couple of steals, but did not commit a turnover.''
