The annual Valley Sports Foundation boys' and girls' basketball all-star games, pitting the City against the Southern Section, is Saturday at Cal State Northridge. The girls play at 5 p.m., followed by the boys at 7.

Ferguson thanked the players - ``Every year, we have a star or two. This year, the Kowalski brothers and David Russell David Russell may refer to:

He thanked all of those who coached the lower levels, ``including all the members of my family. ... They do a good job of developing them, from the freshman year all the way to when they're seniors.''

And he sort of thanked himself when he alluded to his 14 years at Royal. No other Marmonte League coach has been around for half that time.

``Part of it is consistency,'' Ferguson said. ``Anytime you're successful over a long period of time, you have a successful program, not just successful teams.''

It also was funny to see Taft coach Doug Magorien, as a member of the seeding committee, try to get Chatsworth out of his side of the bracket. But since Chatsworth beat Venice and Monroe, the Chancellors had to be seeded third, behind No. 2 Taft.

The pick: Grant will lose to Palisades in the second round. Taft will beat Venice for the City title in a repeat of last year's final. ...

Matchup of the week:

KELLIE COX

Quartz Hill

Pitcher

ASHLIE D'ERRICO

Highland

Catcher Cox's move from center field to the pitching circle is a big reason Quartz Hill has won nine of 10 and is primed to win the Golden League softball championship with a victory over Highland. She's 10-2 - including a 9-4 win over the Bulldogs on April 20 - with a 0.47 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 74 1/3 innings. Cox also is batting .632, by far the best average in the region among large schools.

D'Errico, a four-year standout, struggled for most of the season but has raised her average to .300. She's still looking for Looking for
