Burroughs is considered the toughest home site in the Foothill League because, as girls' coach Doug Nicol readily admits, the gym is run down and the floor has some unexpected bounces.

``There are some weak places on that floor that only we know about,'' Nicol said. ``We love that place. We call it 'The Barn' because it looks like one, but other coaches hate to bring their teams in there.''

    ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

    GRAZIELLA CAREDDA

    Junior, Agoura water polo

The goalkeeper is one of the few newcomers in a starting lineup that's been together for years, but the Chargers haven't missed a beat since the graduation of last year's All-Southern Section goalkeeper Michelle Rozzen.

Caredda helped Agoura complete its third consecutive undefeated Marmonte League season last week as well as beating traditional power Harvard-Westlake of Studio City. The Chargers enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in Division II.

    DUSTIN VILLEPIGUE

    Senior, Simi Valley Basketball

The 6-foot-9 Villepigue, who is headed to Gonzaga, led the Pioneers to two wins that clinched a playoff berth. Villepigue had a career-high 41 points Wednesday in Simi Valley's 73-67 upset of Thousand Oaks, the Marmonte League champions. Two days later against Royal, he had 21 points and 16 rebounds as the Pioneers won easily 82-42. It's been a tough year for the Pioneers (18-8), who finished in fourth place after winning the league title the last three years.

    UP AND COMER

    DONNIE TAYLOR

    Park View Intermediate

Taylor, 13, is an ``A'' student and an eighth-grader at Park View Intermediate School in Lancaster. The 5-foot-11 center on the basketball team has dunked during games. Taylor usually only plays in the first half to keep the games competitive and averages 23 points and 17 rebounds. In a tournament in Bakersfield, he averaged 26 points per game and was named most outstanding player. The Park View team is 35-0 in Taylor's two seasons.

    HEAD TO HEAD

    Matchup of the week:

    STEVE SMITH

    Taft, Forward

    DeWAYNE ANDERSON

    Grant, Forward

Smith and Anderson are the top two athletes in this first-round City bracket playoff game. They're a pair of slashers who can break defenders down on drives to the basket as well as pull up on the perimeter. Anderson has come on strongly since returning to the Lancers lanc·er

after leaving the team for three weeks because of personal problems. Over the last six games, he's been one of the area's best players, using his speed and leaping ability to get past defenders on drives and his quick hands and hustle to chase down loose balls and rebounds or create turnovers. Smith has been consistent all year, averaging 25.2 points and 9.2 rebounds, and showing the ability to score from anywhere on the court. His improved long-range game has opened things up for himself and teammates, making it tougher to stop Taft's offense. From an athletic standpoint, it will be intriguing to watch Smith and Anderson go head to head.
