CHATTER: TAFT'S STARR NOT WORRIED ABOUT QB.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Taft High of Woodland Hills football coach Troy Starr had it pretty easy the past three years. Most coaches come into a season fretting fret·ting

over their quarterback situation, but not Starr, who had Brandon Hance (1998-1999) and Rick Clausen Richard James Clausen (born June 29, 1982) is a former American football player who played college football for Louisiana State University. He transfered to the University of Tennessee, where he walked on to the football team as a backup quarterback.  (2000).

Just how comfortable was Starr? Hance is the starting quarterback at Purdue and Clausen is a freshman at Louisiana State.

Now that Starr will turn to unproven unproven Dubious, nonscientific, not proven, quack, questionable, unscientific adjective Relating to that which has not been validated by reproducible experiments or other scientific methods for determining effect or efficacy  starter Cary Dove, one would think he'd be a little uptight.

He's not.

``Let's face it, whoever we put back there, we'll make him look pretty good,'' Starr said.

Dove, who has lots of potential. It's more of a statement on what Dove has to work with.

It starts with explosive junior wide receiver Steve Smith, a 6-3 high-wire act. Smith is regarded as one of the top players in the country and he keeps getting better every day. Most important, he keeps things in perspective.

``He knows as well as anyone he's been overhyped,'' Starr said. ``So he knows there is room for improvement and he wants very badly to get better.''

As usual, Smith was a one-man highlight reel when Taft won the Northridge Passing Tournament over the weekend.

``I don't think there's any question, if you asked anyone who was there who the best player was, it was Steve,'' Starr said.

But it's not just Smith. The Toreadors also have WR/RB Noah Smith (no relation), who took sixth in the 200 and ninth in the 100 at the state track championships, and the underclassmen he lost to don't play football.

``Based on that, he's the fastest football player in California,'' Starr said. ``For a high school kid, he's got elite speed. Not just in the state but the nation. He's fast.

With that kind of talent and speed surrounding Dove, you can see why Starr isn't worried. ...

Hart coach Mike Herrington is also relaxed despite returning one starter on defense. Of course, it helps that the lone returnee re·turn·ee

Herrington is confident the Indians will get their defense worked out, and it helps that the offense is in capable hands, as usual.

``He looks awesome, he's going to be really good,'' Herrington said.

In addition, Hart will have running back Tim Gregory, who sat out most of last year with a knee injury. Gregory is Greg·o·ry I   , Saint Known as "Gregory the Great." 540?-604.

``He can't wait for the season to get started,'' Herrington said. ``He's worked so hard to get better. He's a little ahead of schedule, which goes to show you how dedicated he was.
