CHATTER: SUNSET SIX STRIVES FOR SUCCESS.Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer The Marine League owns City Section football. Same with the Western League in boys' basketball and the West Valley League in girls' soccer. The Northern League dominates cross country. The Sunset Six League owns the Invitational Division. Since the City releagued two years ago, no Sunset Six team - Grant, Poly, North Hollywood, Canoga Park, Verdugo Hills and Hollywood - has won a City title in any sport. In most sports, the league's champion gets a double-digit seeding in the playoffs. Everyone else who makes the postseason gets placed in the Invitational bracket. True, the league has had championship success. Poly has won the last two Invitational girls' soccer titles, and North Hollywood is the defending boys' volleyball Invitational champion. In the past, Verdugo Hills has played for 3-A softball titles, too. Grant surprised defending City champion Taft in four games. Now, Cahn finds himself entering league play and he wants better competition. The baseball coaches feel the same way, especially since Hollywood dropped the sport this year. ``It puts us at a disdavantage,'' Vranau said. ``That's three games we lose off our schedule. The fact their program folded indicates the level of weakness some of the schools have.'' City commissioner Barbara Fiege has yet to hear one complaint from any Sunset Six League coach, athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic , principal, parent or player. ``They have some strengths, maybe not as many strengths as the other seven leagues,'' Fiege said. ``Canoga Park has done well in football, Grant and North Hollywood do well in basketball, Poly has done well in boys' volleyball and Verdugo Hills is strong in softball.'' The City is committed to a four-year cycle, so there won't be any review until the end of the third year, 2002. ``I know we're stuck, and I know it's not a good thing,'' Vranau said.... Rawson pitched well enough to win, the only damage being Sara Dean's two-run double after an error put runners at second and first. After splitting pitching duties her first two years, Gonzales is now the Spirits' lone hurler, and she's responded with an impressive 5-2 start, although she dropped a doubleheader to Notre Dame Saturday to stop a win streak at five games.
