 and his Stoneridge Prep of Tarzana teammates know how to score. Collectively, they orchestrated one of the most prolific scoring performances in Southern Section boys' basketball history Tuesday night.

The Tigers beat visiting South Bay of Torrance 151-5 in their nonleague season opener, tying the section record for most points in a game set by St. Margaret's of San Juan Capistrano San Juan Capistrano (săn wän kăpĭsträ`nō), city (1990 pop. 26,183), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1961. San Juan Capistrano has some manufactures, including aircraft parts, medical apparatus, and boats, but the economy is  in 1993-94.

``The score says it all pretty much,'' first-year coach Ron Slater said. ``Basically, I came here and inherited a good team.''

Spencer, a first-team All-Southern Section selection last season as a junior, was the catalyst against South Bay. The 6-foot-3 guard scored 35 points in just two full quarters; he sat out a majority of the second quarter and the entire fourth.

South Bay was held to three points in the first half and went scoreless for more than 22 minutes before their final basket with a few minutes remaining in the game.

``Defense comes first. If we do that, the offense will come around,'' said Slater, who graduated from Sylmar High in 1995. ``Every time I turned around, the score was going up. I took the starters out, and the bench players did the same thing.

``We didn't know anything about the record, and it wasn't our goal. Whether it's the best team in the state or the worst, we're going to go out and play hard from the tip to the final buzzer.'' ...

It hasn't been the best year for the Tennessee football team, but Volunteers quarterback Casey Clausen Casey Clausen (born January 9, 1981) is a former American football player who played college football for the University of Tennessee. He took over the starting position from A.J. Suggs. , the former Alemany High of Mission Hills standout, has put together his third consecutive productive season.

Clausen's 175 yards and two touchdowns in a victory over Kentucky on Saturday moved him into second place on the team's all-time passing list for yards (6,597), completions (519) and total yards (6,252). He's 24-6 as the Tennessee starter.

His coaches agree, particularly after the Kentucky game.

The latest addition is former Canoga Park sharpshooter Cecil Brown, a redshirt freshman who has played his way into the regular rotation. Hull and Fullove helped the Gauchos beat USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  on Tuesday night, and Brown provided a valuable spark off the bench.
