CHATTER: SOFTBALL SQUAD RETURNS.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Staff Writer

At UCLA's Easton Stadium, also known as Olympic Softball Central, there was little concern - even when there was no Olympic team.

Seven former or current Bruins were members of the 2000 Olympic team until last week, when a federal arbiter vacated the entire 18-player roster after ruling a 1996 Olympian, Julie Smith, wasn't given sufficient explanation as to why she wasn't named to the 2000 team. Smith filed a grievance with the Amateur Softball Association and won.

Then, last weekend, the entire team, except for one alternate, was reinstated.

``I feel pretty secure,'' pitcher Lisa Fernandez Lisa Fernandez (born February 22, 1971, in New York City) is a renowned softball pitcher of Cuban-Puerto Rican descent who established an Olympic record in softball with 25 strikeouts as a member of the United States Women Olympic Softball Team.  said.

She should. She's one of the game's all-time greats. But what about the rookies, such as UCLA's Stacy Nuveman or Christie Ambrosi?

``I wasn't too nervous, from the feeling I got from my teammates and people in the know,'' Nuveman said.

She used to play on the sidelines at her brothers' baseball games. , Sheila Douty and Jennifer Brundage, were reinstated to the 15-player roster. ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

JUSTIN McCLURE

Junior

Royal swimming

Swimming often is considered secondary at water polo power Royal of Simi Valley, but McClure doesn't see it that way. The two-sport athlete has been a club swimmer for several years and has long been ranked among the best in his age group.

Six months after his speed and clutch shooting helped the Highlanders to the Southern Section boys' water polo final, McClure is at the forefront of returning the swim team to prominence.

He won the 100-yard backstroke (55.25 seconds) and 500 freestyle (4:43.80) and swam on the winning 200-medley and 400-freestyle relay teams at Friday's Marmonte League finals, leading Royal to its first title since 1982. Royal outscored second-place Thousand Oaks 484-447 and finished 61 points ahead of defending champion Westlake.

McClure is scheduled to compete in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke at this week's Southern Section meet.

MANDY KILIONSKI

Freshman

Simi Valley softball

Preparing to face Marmonte League rival Thousand Oaks in the Lancers' tournament semifinal on Saturday was a priority for Kilionski.

``I was so focused. I thought about it the whole night before. I wanted that game,'' she said.

The freshman, who was promoted from the junior varsity to help the inconsistent Pioneers, yielded just three hits and outdueled Lancers' ace Nicole Angelo in a 3-2 Simi Valley upset.

Then Kilionski blanked Cerritos, ranked first in the Southern Section Division II poll, 1-0 in the tournament championship game. She defeated Dons standout pitcher Jessica Vander Linden, who has signed with Florida State.

In 16 innings Saturday, Kilionski (6-2) had 16 strikeouts to earn tournament MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  honors.

Thousand Oaks coach Gary Walin has been impressed with Kilionski since she pitched in the Simi Valley youth leagues.

``If there's anybody in this tournament that I would have liked to given the MVP to besides someone from my team it was her,'' Walin said.

Matchup of the week

NICHOLE RAWSON

Highland

Pitcher

AMANDA RICKER

Quartz Hill

Pitcher

Both teams can clinch a share of the Golden League title, but Quartz Hill figures to be more confident because the four-time champion Rebels (16-6, 7-1) have beaten the Bulldogs (15-6, 7-1) six times in a row, including a 1-0 eight-inning victory this season. Junior right-hander Rawson (13-6, 1.01), a three-year starter, possesses a terrific fastball. She held Quartz Hill to five hits - allowing one through six innings - with five strikeouts last time, but her teammates left 10 runners on base. Junior right-hander Ricker (14-3, 1.94) isn't as fast as Rawson, but she still has 99 strikeouts in 108 innings.
