You have to give him a lot of credit. He worked his butt off before he even got to training camp. When he got to training camp he looked like a totally different player.''

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

ASHLEY CALENDO

Junior

Hart softball

Calendo shut out California of Whittier 1-0 in her first career start to carry the Indians (4-0) of Newhall to the Hart Classic softball tournament championship Saturday at Central Park in Saugus.

Calendo, a right-hander, used a variety of breaking pitches and excellent control (she didn't give up a walk or a wild pitch) to defeat defending Division II finalist California (5-1).

Calendo gained confidence after working her way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third. She eventually retired the final 12 batters in order.

``I wasn't nervous at all. I trusted my team,'' she said.

for the Cavaliers of Reseda helped his team to a 5-0 start and the program's first Daily News Invitational championship. In Saturday's final against Alemany of Mission Hills, Marcial went 2 for 2, including bunting for a base hit. Marcial walked, sacrificed and had a key steal of home to shift the momentum back the Cavaliers' way after Alemany had rallied. The leadoff batter was one of the tournament's most consistent hitters, and with his speed, once he reached base, it was difficult to keep him put. Marcial is also a steady fielder at shortstop. Marcial, who led the City in stolen bases and runs last season, has signed with Nevada.
