CHATTER: QUARTZ HILL HELPS CURB TURMOIL BY KEEPING SOCCER COACH.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

Quartz Hill High has retained boys' soccer coach Tony Bruce, bringing much-sought stability to a Rebels program that won a share of the Southern Section Div. I championship only a year ago.

Bruce took over at Quartz Hill in January when Andre Matalon resigned after a player revolt during a tournament in Florida. The Rebels, who started the season ranked No. 3 in the nation, finished with a 13-7-5 record and lost in the second round of the playoffs.

``Coming on in the middle of the season, I had no chance to really experiment with anything,'' Bruce said. ``Now I have the chance to put together a program the way I want to do it.''

Bruce, a longtime Olympic Development coach in the area, said he hoped to better integrate Quartz Hill's junior varsity junior varsity

Quartz Hill won the 2001 section co-championship with a 28-0-2 record under Matalon. Bruce was invited back by Quartz Hill administrators after the season and accepted the offer to return.

Bruce will lose several senior starters, including all-area players Kiel McClung Kiel McClung (born May 1, 1985 in Palmdale, California) is an American soccer player who currently plays defense for California Victory of the USL First Division. ``I suppose if you look at it, it's kind of going to be a rebuilding year,'' Bruce said. ``But that's part of the challenge. If we can do well without Kiel and Kerry and the other guys, that will go a long way to building a program.'' ...

Two high school boys' basketball all-star games will be held tonight at Cleveland High of Reseda. What makes the games different, however, is that they are exclusively for players from the Southern Section's smallest schools.
