THEN AND NOW Harvard-Westlake of Studio City begins the state basketball tournament at home at 7:30 tonight against Hanford. The Wolverines have won two state titles, here's a look at the first one: ``A first half of sloppy play turned into a second half of domination caused by the Collins' twins as the Wolverines' furious third-quarter run allowed Harvard-Westlake to cruise to a 62-49 win over Grant High of Sacramento at the Arco Arena. It was Harvard-Westlake's first State basketball championship. ``This is the greatest feeling,'' Jarron Collins said. ``We had to assert ourselves because we didn't want to come home losers.'' The victory wasn't easy. Grant (31-3), possibly the most athletic team Harvard-Westlake (30-2) faced all season, jumped out to a 33-27 halftime lead by using speed to create easy fast breaks as junior guard LaRon Bryant burned Harvard-Westlake for 11 points. In the second half, though, Jason and Jarron Collins began dominating the inside, altering shots, converting layups and getting rebounds, all the while dwarfing Grant's chances. The Wolverines outscored Grant 21-4 in the third quarter and Jason Collins (game-high 19 points) picked up five of his 17 rebounds in that period. Grant coach Eric Satterwhite didn't have a player above 6-foot-3, so he tried to convince his club before the game that the twins were no taller than he, 6-6. ``It worked for the first half,'' Satterwhite said. ``They believed they weren't 6-10. But in the second half reality started to hit.'' The Wolverines finished 23-0 against California teams this season and with four starters back, plus most of their reserves, the push has already begun for Harvard-Westlake to move up to Division II or I in 1997.'' - Originally published in the Daily News on March 17, 1996 CAPTION(S): 3 photos, 5 boxes Photo: (1) Ashlee Trebilcock (2) Jordan Farmar (3) Joe Jacobs Box: (1) ATHLETES OF THE WEEK (see text) (2) UP AND COMER (see text) (3) THEN AND NOW (see text) (4) STATILICIOUS (5) ON DECK: Highlights of the coming week |
