CHATTER: PLAYOFF FORMAT MAY BE CHANGED.

There are rumblings within Southern Section basketball circles that the section might reformat (1) To change the record layout of a file or database.

its division breakdown so that each is represented by the same number of teams in the playoffs.

The section breaks basketball into 10 divisions based on enrollment, but some are considerably larger than others. Thus, when the playoffs come around, some teams have to win more games to earn championships.

For instance, last year the Division IV-A and IV-AA brackets brackets: see punctuation.  consisted of eight teams each, whereas Division I-AAA and I-AA both had 34 teams and Division I-A had 36 teams.

Southern Section spokesman Thom Simmons, the section is exploring options to even things out.

According to a source, one plan under consideration is to narrow the enrollment ratio in Division I and V to create balance across the board.

Under the proposed plan, Division I would consist of schools with enrollments of 1,700 and above, whereas in the past it was 1,500 and above. Under the format under consideration, the schools that fall between 1,500 and 1,700 would move to a lower division.

In addition, Division V would change from 300 and below to 175 and below, pushing teams that fall between 175 and 300 to a higher division.

The intent is for each division to have the same number of teams.

Under the Souther Section's proposed plan, the divisions will be more balanced, but some section schools could play much larger schools from other sections in the state playoffs.

Nevertheless, the source said the Southern Section will move forward with the proposed plan. ...
