ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

HEATHER HAMASAKI

Glendale

Senior

As usual, Crescenta Valley of La Crescenta, at 4-0, is out in front in the Pacific League softball race. That made last Thursday's game between Glendale and Arcadia, which came in with 2-1 league records, all the more important.

Hamasaki, a senior pitcher who will attend Lehigh University in the fall, responded by throwing a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts to help Glendale win and keep the team in the race. She'll need another big game today against Hoover of Glendale, which also is 3-1.

BRIAN BIRD

Thousand Oaks

Junior

In just his second start of the season, Bird threw a no-hitter in the championship game of the San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  tournament. Primarily a first baseman and middle reliever since he made his only other start the first week of the season, he had seven strikeouts and two walks in the 1-0 victory over Marmonte League rival Moorpark. He is 2-0.

James is averaging almost 20 points a game as a starting guard for the sophomore girls' basketball team. She transferred to Cleveland of Reseda too late to join the varsity but is expected to be an important contributor next season.

RAY RAVAGO

Alemany

Shortstop

When the Mission League's baseball co-leaders meet today, Rapoport and Ravago are sure to play a key role. The Division I-bound seniors are similar in their ability to contribute either with power or speed on the basepaths. Rapoport, who has signed with Stanford, is among the region's stolen-base leaders. Ravago, headed to Cal State Northridge, is among the biggest home run threats in a lineup loaded with power. Both also are accomplished defensive players. The teams meet twice this week, and since neither side wants a repeat of last year's co-championship, getting the early advantage today is key.

Today, 3:45 p.m. at Chaminade High

THEN AND NOW

When former Alemany of Mission Hills and UCLA standout Carly Funicello does color commentary for the Battle of the Valley senior all-star basketball game Saturday on Los Angeles' Channel 36, she will have come full circle.

Funicello was recommended for the job by Melissa Hearlihy, Funicello's coach at Alemany who now coaches at Harvard-Westlake of Studio City.

It's easy to understand why Hearlihy would think of her. At Alemany, Funicello was one of the best post players the area has produced, leading Alemany to three Southern Section Div. II final appearances over her four years and the championship in 1994.

That team finished the year 30-1, losing only in the state tournament to Woodbridge of Irvine, after which Funicello was named the California Sophomore Player of the Year.

She signed with UCLA as part of a deep recruiting class and spent her four years as a key reserve post player behind Jennae Hubbard. Her contributions helped the Bruins to the Elite Eight in 1999.

After she graduated in 2000, Funicello tried out for the Sparks and was the last person cut before opening day. She tried to play in Europe but had to give up that dream when she lost an eye in a bungee-cord accident. In addition to doing color commentary Saturday, Funicello is a biology, social studies and religion teacher at St. Euphrasia Euphrasia (eyebright) is a genus of about 450 species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Orobanchaceae (formerly treated in the family Scrophulariaceae), with a cosmopolitan distribution. They are semi-parasitic on grasses.  Middle School in North Hills.
