CHATTER: NO. 1 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL RECRUIT COMMITS TO USC.

It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team pulled off one of the biggest recruiting coups in recent memory when Jacki Gemelos, a 6-foot guard from St. Mary's High of Stockton, widely regarded as the No. 1 recruit in the country, verbally committed Wednesday to the Trojans - just three weeks after de-committing from Connecticut.

``Over the summer, she decided she wanted to visit some schools on the West Coast. I told her she needed to call (Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma Geno Auriemma (born March 23, 1954 in Montella, Italy) is an Italian-American basketball coach, best known as the head coach of the University of Connecticut Huskies women's basketball team, in which capacity Auriemma has led the Huskies to five National Collegiate Athletic ) before she did and it didn't go over well,'' said Tom Gonsalves, her coach at St. Mary's.

``I'm a little surprised she made another commitment so quickly, but I think she just really liked the whole package at USC: the players, the coach, the new arena.''

Gemelos' commitment gives USC four top recruits for the Class of 2006. USC's class also includes Narbonne of Harbor City forward Morghan Medlock, a friend of Gemelos'.

--Former Quartz Hill High standout Jodie Cox, an All-America pitcher at Cal State Fullerton, was hired Wednesday as pitching coach at Cal State Northridge.

``It's good to be back home and back in the Big West,'' said Cox, who was the Daily News Player of the Year in 1998 after leading the Rebels to the Southern Section Div. II title. ``It's going to be a little weird when we play Cal State Fullerton, but when you get between the lines Between the lines can refer to:
  • The subtext of a letter, fictional work, conversation or other piece of communication
  • Between The Lines (TV series), an early 1990s BBC television programme.
 I guess it doesn't matter who your friends were.''

--Freshman midfielder Sal Zizzo Salvatore (Sal) Zizzo (born April 3, 1987 in San Diego, California) is an American soccer midfielder/striker, who plays for German side Hannover 96 along with fellow San Diego high school alumnus Steve Cherundolo.  was the Pac-10 men's soccer Player of the Week after scoring a goal and assisting two more in second-ranked UCLA's 4-0 romp last weekend over No. 4 Maryland.

--Former Hart of Newhall football standout Chris Frome, a junior at Notre Dame, made the first start of his career Saturday at defensive end. Frome made one unassisted tackle, but he also had a handful of hurries rushing Pitt quarterback Tyler Palko.
