CHATTER: NEWS AND NOTES FROM LOCAL SPORTS VALENCIA'S HERRICK SPEAKING LIKE A SOUTHERNER AFTER OLE MISS TRIP.

Valencia High's Michael Herrick, California's all-time leading passer, threw for 364 yards and a touchdown last week, pushing his career yardage total to 10,366, good for 19th on the national list.

Herrick returned Monday from Mississippi, where he took an official recruiting visit after verbally committing to Ole Miss during the summer.

``He had a great time,'' said Greg Herrick, Michael's father. ``After two days in Mississippi, Michael said he already started talking like them.''

--Harold Vollkommer, Terry Kaldkusdal, Fred Cornwell and Bob Rosene will be inducted tonight into the Canyon High of Canyon Country's boys' basketball Hall of Fame. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Canyon Country.

Vollkommer (Class of 1977) was a four-year letterman who set a school career scoring record that stood for 14 years.

Kaldkusdal (1979) and Cornwell (1979) led Canyon to the Southern Section semifinals; Kaldkusdal was an All-Southern Section selection, and Cornwell, a three-year starter, played pro football.

Rosene coached at Canyon from 1975 to 1978 and was the school's first winning coach.

--Former Hart of Newhall girls' basketball standout Ashlee Trebilcock, a UCLA freshman, will be honored in ceremonies Wednesday night in Hart's gymnasium, where her No. 00 jersey will be retired prior to the boys' alumni game.

Trebilcock, a 5-foot-9 guard, was a four-time first-team All-Southern Section selection and a two-time section Player of the Year.

--Former Sylmar High football coach Jeff Engilman guided West Ranch of Stevenson Ranch's freshman team to a 10-0 record, with most of the victories by 30 points or more.

--Ramon Perry, a multisport standout at San Fernando High who played football at College of the Canyons and Pierce, received second-team All-Lone Star Conference honors as a junior receiver at Division II West Texas A&M.

--The inaugural Westlake Soccer Showcase is scheduled for Dec. 3, with the Warriors playing host to a seven-game schedule featuring several of the area's top girls' soccer teams, as well as two from Ventura County.

Westlake High girls' soccer coach Frank Marino enlisted the help of several other area coaches to organize an event that would not only promote the sport locally, but attract college coaches by gathering a number of top-ranked teams in the same location in the first week of the season.

``We wanted to create matchups that might not otherwise happen, except for teams possibly playing each other in tournaments,'' Marino said. ``We figured if they have events like this for basketball, why can't it be done with soccer?''

The tentative schedule features Oak Park vs. Newbury Park at 10 a.m., Highland of Palmdale vs. Flintridge Sacred Heart of La Canada Flintridge at 11:35 a.m., Canyon of Canyon Country vs. Agoura at 1:10 p.m., Royal vs. El Camino Real of Woodland Hills at 2:45 p.m., Saugus vs. Ventura at 4:20 p.m., Buena of Ventura vs. Thousand Oaks at 5:55 p.m., and Westlake facing Harvard-Westlake of Studio City at 7:30 p.m.

Senior, Crescenta Valley of La Crescental

Sellers, arguably the Southern Section's most improved cross country runner, finished third in the Southern Section Div. I final Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College. His time of 14 minutes, 59 seconds on the 2.91-mile course was the fifth-fastest in all divisions Saturday and the best by an area runner.

EMMALINE HARTEL

Senior, Birmingham of Lake Balboa

Hartel won her third consecutive City Section girls' cross country championship Saturday at Pierce College, running the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 16 seconds to finish more than 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Sarah Roth of El Camino Real of Woodland Hills. Hartel's season-best time led Birmingham to its first girls' team title since 1998 and moved her into undisputed first place on the school's all-time list of section champions.

KATHRYN IWATA

Sophomore, Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge

It wasn't immediately apparent that Iwata finished in front of Chadwick of Palos Verdes' Kelly Owen to finish fifth in the Southern Section Div. V girls' cross country final. She initially was listed as the sixth-place finisher, causing Flintridge Prep to lose to Chadwick 69-70.
