Sports Shack's 18-and-under girls' volleyball team has enjoyed its share of success during the past decade at the annual summer Volleyball Festival, but this year's performance might have been the club's best ever.

In Student Sports' final National Fab 50 poll, Royal (29-2) was ranked No. 2, behind University High in Palm Harbor, Fla.

The Highlanders, who won their first Southern Section Div. I title, were ranked No. 11 in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Super 25 poll. University (31-0), which won its second consecutive Class 5-A title in Florida, was ranked No. 2.

El Camino Real was ranked No. 2 in the West Region top 20 poll and finished No. 20 in USA Today's final Super 25 baseball poll.

--Former Hart baseball standout Danny Williams has signed with Division II Abilene Christian after two solid seasons at Texarkana JC in Texas.

--Valencia softball coach Donna Lee has put of retirement and signed a one-year contract to return as softball coach. She's also the school's new cross country coach.

--In other Valencia softball news, sophomore pitcher Jordan Taylor has earned first-team all-state honors by Cal-Hi Sports.

Second-team honorees include Saugus pitcher Ashley Arnett and Valencia first baseman Breanne Javier. Saugus catcher Tiffany Huff and Hart junior shortstop Emily Sudik earned second-team all-state underclass honors.

--Saugus football coaches are high on offensive lineman Ramsen Golpashin, a 300-pounder who started six games as a sophomore before going down with a season-ending shoulder injury.

--Hart incoming freshman Spencer Souza is hoping to impact the freshman football team after starring as a baseball player at the William S. Hart PONY league.

Souza is competing with Darrin Sholes for the starting position.

--The third annual College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  alumni men's basketball game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Aug. 13.

--After recovering from a knee injury that cost him his sophomore year in 2002, former Hart football standout Joe Bernardi, injured his other knee in an All-Star game last weekend.

Bernardi, an offensive lineman, accepted a scholarship offer from Fresno State.

He is scheduled to undergo surgery in Los Angeles in two weeks, and said he plans to take a year off from football as a medical gray-shirt before beginning his career at Fresno State.
