Jin Soo Kim of Montclair Prep of Panorama City has transferred to a prep school on the East Coast, but the Mounties remain confident in their quest to repeat as Southern Section Div. IV-A boys' champions.

``Both of those two eventually will play college basketball College basketball most often refers to the American basketball competitive governance structure established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, or NCAA. History

--Any time a high school wins its first varsity football game, it's an historical event. But Golden Valley's debut victory - a 24-14 triumph over visiting Salesian of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Saturday - proved especially gratifying grat·i·fy

because nearly all of Golden Valley's seven losses this season have been so one-sided.

You can only imagine the thrill of victory when the agony of defeat has been losses by scores of 66-0, 67-14, 62-14, 56-7, etc.

``After seven losses in a row, our coaches tell us to keep going but it's hard,'' said Martel Hammond, who sparked Golden Valley with 65 yards rushing, two receptions and a touchdown against Salesian. ``I was really starting to wonder if we'd ever win a game. I'm still sore but it feels good.''

Corey Bryant, a converted punter who is Golden Valley's fourth quarterback since spring practice began, started for the first time against Salesian, completing 4 of 7 passes for 87 yards - and no interceptions.

``It was bad losing all the time. Believe me, we were all tired of it,'' Bryant said. ``All year we've come back to school every Monday, and everyone would tell us we're no good and that we should just quit. But today, everyone has congratulated us. We finally won a game, and it's the best feeling in the world. It feels great.''
