CHATTER: NEWS AND NOTES FROM LOCAL SPORTS G.H. TRYING FOR NEW STANDARD.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Staff Writer

Change is clearly in the air at Granada Hills High. The athletics program is undergoing an overhaul, from new state-of-the-art facilities to a change in attitude.

``I don't mean this in a bad way, but frankly I'm tired of reading about the Harts (of Newhall) and the Oaks Christians (of Westlake Village) and the Chaminades (of West Hills) when it comes to being premier sports programs,'' said Granada Hills assistant principal Chris Davis Chris Davis is the name of a couple of people:
  • Chris Davis (musician), a musician
  • Chris Davis (football player), a football player for the Tennessee Titans.
, who recently was put in charge of athletics. ``The thinking around here is, why shouldn't Granada Hills be every bit as competitive as anyone else in this area?''

Granada Hills got a huge boost last year when the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  granted it independent charter status, which enables the school to govern itself and control its finances.

``In essence, we're our own district,'' Davis said.

That has made it easier for Granada Hills to implement its ambitious plan. Work is scheduled to start soon on an all-weather turf for the football field, which also includes a new track, making Granada Hills the only City Section school with a turf stadium.

There also are plans for a new fitness center.

Davis has opened the boys' and girls' basketball coaching jobs, hoping to attract high-profile coaches. Both coaches were invited to re-apply, which last season's girls' coach Carolyn Gunny will do. Sean Collyer, who coached the boys last season, accepted a job as an assistant men's coach at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics

 on Tuesday.

Davis recently added a head football coach - former Pasadena City College assistant Staum Joseph - and boys' coaches for soccer (Ray Portela) and golf (Chris Ancheta).

Longtime Reseda High football and swimming coach Joel Schaeffer is retiring Monday. Schaeffer spent the past 40 years working for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In Schaeffer's 23 years, Reseda was 157-94-5, including winning six league titles and City championships in 1986 and 1995.

Two key players, who missed time with injuries last season, are back in action for the Australian tour. All-Pacific-10 Conference guard Noelle Quinn, who missed the second half of the season with a knee injury, is back. Forward Julia Pitts, who redshirted with a knee injury, is also healthy.

``We're very excited about the trip to Australia. It will be a good opportunity for a lot of people to get playing time against tough competition,'' UCLA coach Kathy Olivier said. ``This will be a great educational experience, and it's also going to be a great team bonding experience. We are very appreciative to UCLA for giving us this experience.''

--Saugus High's Thomas Milone has committed to a USC baseball scholarship.

``It's great,'' said his mother, Nancy. ``It's a wonderful school and quite an honor to get a scholarship to USC.''

Milone, a left-handed pitcher and first baseman, was the Foothill League MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994.
