CHATTER: NEWS AND NOTES FROM LOCAL SPORTS: VILLANOVA-BOUND VALENCIA STAR QUITS SOFTBALL TEAM.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Just days after signing a Division I softball scholarship with Villanova, senior Danielle Maricle has quit the Valencia High softball team.

Maricle missed last week's mandatory meeting for returning players, and the 5-foot-11 infielder confirmed Tuesday she won't play for the Vikings, who reached the Southern Section Div. I final last year.

``There's no way I'll be back,'' Maricle said. ``I think I'm going to try to broaden my horizons and focus on my grades. I love the girls. That's going to be the biggest thing I'll miss. They're great.''

Valencia coach Donna Lee Donna Lee is a bebop jazz standard itself based on the chord changes of the traditional jazz standard "(Back Home Again in) Indiana".[1] It is named after the now-obscure bassist Donna Lee.  said Maricle never told her she was leaving but was informed by other players.

``It's her choice,'' Lee said. ``My feeling is I want girls who want to be out there. I've got to abide by To stand to; to adhere; to maintain.

the kid's choice. I don't beg anyone to play. She'll be a loss to our program, but we have younger girls who will have to pick up the slack.''

The season doesn't start until March, but Lee said Maricle won't be welcomed back if she changes her mind.
